New Feature Announcement: Include Max Waste

Boise Cascade is excited to announce new enhancements to the batch-level controls, giving you more control and flexibility to consider the Max Waste inventory threshold as a default batch setting or on a per batch basis when it's appropriate.

What's New

  • Added a new batch-level checkbox: Include Max Waste.

  • Default at release: Off (disabled).
  • Locations can:
    • include this setting in their default batch settings (under Saw Settings)
      and/or
    • enable it per batch when appropriate.
  • When enabled, the optimizer can skip the final trim cut on a board only when the remaining end waste is ≤ the Max Waste value configured in Inventory Management.
  • In the Cut Solution view, the hover over tool tip now displays:
    • the piece length required for the project, and
    • the extra length included (the waste being shipped with the piece).

How Does This Benefit You?

  • Improves automated saw efficiency by reducing unnecessary final trim cuts that would only create a small scrap piece.
  • Can reduce processing time for qualifying cut patterns (fewer cuts).
  • Keeps control at the location level using the existing Max Waste threshold, while still allowing batch-by-batch control.
  • Provides transparency in the Cut Solution hover details by showing exactly how much extra length is being included.

Example

  • Max Waste is set to 2’.

  • A pattern shows 3 18' pieces being cut from a 55' RML
  • With "Include Max Waste" enabled, the system may skip the final trim and ship the piece long instead of cutting off a small waste piece.
  • When the feature is "Off" - A 1' 1/4" piece of scrap is created.

  • When the feature is "On" - The scrap is included with the 18' piece, making the overall length 19' 1/2". This additional length is identified in the hover over information.
