Working with the Manual Material List

The Manual Material list may be removed at some future date. We recommend using the new BC Material List because it allows more flexibility for grouping materials and how the list is displayed.

If you want to use the Manual Material List, here is how to create one:

From the Design app, the second option is to create a new material list. Select New Material List from the drop down to create a manual material list.

Beneath that is the Product Source, which you may ignore. This no longer is needed.

Creating the material list is simple. The material may be separated by floor. The default “First Floor” name can be edited by clicking on the pencil icon or text, and additional floors may be added if needed.
Material is additionally separated by type: I-Joists, Beams, Rimboard, Blocking Panels, Connectors and “Other Products”.

To add I-Joists, click on the plus (+) sign or the words Add I-Joists.
A new section will appear with fields necessary to add this product to your material list. Use the mouse to switch from one field to the next or the tab key. Shift-Tab will take you back to a previous field.
Enter the Mark or label, Series, Depth, Quantity and Length.

Click tab. The focus: is now on “Add I-Joists”. Pressing the spacebar will immediately create a new line, or you may click on the “Add I-Joists” link and repeat this as needed.
Notice that the Holes value is now highlighted with a 0, this means that there are no holes associated with this member. To add a hole, click on the blue button and a new window will appear.
In the Description box, you can provide a description for reference, for example, “HVAC”.
Location – Enter the distance from the left end to the center of hole.
Choose a Shape and use the fields to enter the size.
Circular and Rectangular are simple.
For Obround: Enter the Width and Height – click on preview. Notice that the Width and Height dimensions are to the Outside of the hole including the half-circle at each end. A radius of one half the height is used.

For Rounded Rectangular: Enter Width and Height - click on preview to see the diagram. Entered dimensions are to the outside of the hole and a 2” radius is used in each corner.

Vertical offset: The default dimension is set to zero (0’0”), which is the centerline of the web. Enter a value in inches to offset the hole up from center or a negative value to offset the hole down in the web.
Click Add and you will notice the hole is added to a new line at the bottom of the box. This will allow you to enter multiple holes as needed for each joist member. Holes are validated automatically by our Boise Design Engine. If the hole size or location fails hole validation you will see a warning: “Hole Validation Failed”. Click OK to return to editing the hole. You may also click “Override” which will allow hole placement with warning notes added to the material list. We caution against this practice. Ultimately, hole validation is your responsibility. If you have questions, refer to the specifier guide, BC Calc or the technical services team.
Click Close and you will be taken back to your material list. The number of holes will be shown.

Click the plus (+) sign to add Beam members in the same way you added joists to the list: type in mark, series, depth, thickness, quantity and length.

Add Rimboard and Blocking Panels using a similar process.

For Connectors, once you have selected the series, depth and Hanger type the model will be narrowed down to the appropriate options. This list cannot be modified. If you need to add a connector not in the list, use the “Other Products” group.
Manage Hangers in Inventory does not currently update this list. Hangers added into inventory are only used to include a SKU number when exporting to a point-of-sale system.

Other Products: This space allows you to add non-Boise materials that need to be shipped with the floor package but will not be optimized. Custom hangers or plywood sheathing could be added here.

Preview TLF Subtotals: This is a quick preview of the Total Linear Footage in the list. Use it to verify the accuracy of your input. Click Close.

Save: click save and a new dialogue box will pop up:
Cancel – takes you back to the input screen
Yes, Finalize Design and Own Operationslocks the material list and your organization will take ownership of the operations activities for this list. You will no longer be able to edit this material list, but this step is necessary to move the material list into a batch for optimization and cutting.
No, Save as Draft is the third option. We recommend using this status if the list may need to be changed.

A new window will require you to enter: Builder, Project and the Attachment Name – this attachment name will be the name for this new material list. If the project is new, select a builder from the list, or the <Unknown> builder. You would then be able to create a new project by clicking the blue plus sign to the right.

Click Save, and you will be brought back to material list screen. On the top left you will see the project name and below that the attachment name. If you stay on this screen you can continue to make changes. Clicking Save again will prompt you to Cancel, Finalize or Save as Draft. Until the material list has been finalized you can return to this screen and edit.
